Manychat alternatives: Bale as Boromir with the caption One does not simply run support on a marketing bot

Manychat alternatives start looking interesting the week your Instagram DMs stop being about lead magnets and start being about orders. Someone comments "LINK" under a reel, gets the discount code, buys, and three days later they're back in the same thread asking where the parcel is. Manychat handles the first half of that story well. The second half is a support problem, and that's where most teams start shopping.

Every price below was checked on the vendor's own pricing page on 20 October 2026. Prices are in the currency each vendor shows, on monthly billing unless I say otherwise.

What Manychat is good at, and what it costs now#

Manychat calls itself "the #1 Instagram automation platform", and for growth work that's fair. Its core features are all about starting conversations: Comment to DM (someone comments a keyword, they get a DM), Story Reply, Live to DM and Follow to DM. Those are on every plan, including Free, where Comment to DM is limited to 4 live automations. It also runs broadcasts, though the pricing page says they exclude Instagram and TikTok.

The pricing changed shape, and if you last looked a year or two ago it'll probably surprise you. The old Free, Pro and Elite line-up is gone. Manychat now charges by active contacts, meaning every real person you interact with in a billing month.

PlanMonthly billingAnnual billingActive contacts includedEach extra contact
Free$0$025n/a
Essential$17/month$14/month250$0.10
Pro$39/month$29/month2,500$0.05
Business$99/month$69/month7,500$0.025
Advanced$199/month$139/month25,000$0.004

Manychat AI is available from Pro upwards. Manychat's pricing page shows it included on Pro, while its AI product page still calls it an "add-on to Manychat Pro" at $29 a month, so check your own invoice before you count on it being free. Extra inbox seats are $25 each.

Why a support team outgrows Manychat#

A leafy plant that has outgrown its small round pot, roots cracking through the side, with a larger empty pot waiting beside it
The tool that got you started is the pot you've outgrown.

None of this makes Manychat a bad tool. It was built to capture attention, and support is a different job. Four things tend to push support teams out.

It can't see your store. Manychat's integrations page lists Hotmart, Klaviyo, HubSpot, Zapier, Make and a handful of email tools. There's no native Shopify integration, so when someone asks "where's my order?", the bot has nothing to look it up in. You can wire something together through the API or Zapier. Someone has to build that, though, and then keep it working.

The AI answers from what you saved, nothing more. Manychat's own description of AI Replies is that it "answers FAQs based on your saved business knowledge". Fine for opening hours. No use for "I was charged twice".

Team handoff costs more than you'd expect. Automatic assignment to your team is on Business ($99/month) and up. On the cheaper plans, a human taking over a thread is a manual job.

Contact pricing punishes busy support weeks. Every person who messages you counts. A courier delay during a sale brings in a wave of people you'd normally never hear from, and every one of them over the allowance is billed.

You've probably seen the result. The comment funnel hums along, and the DMs that need an actual answer pile up in the same inbox, waiting for whoever's on shift.

The alternatives, grouped by the job you need done#

Most "Manychat alternatives" lists rank tools in one long column, usually with the author's own product at number one. That isn't much help... these tools don't do the same job. So I've grouped them by what you're actually trying to fix.

If you want Manychat's growth features for less#

Inro#

Inro is "built exclusively for Instagram", and it reads like a leaner Manychat. It turns comments, story replies, mentions, Lives and ad leads into DM conversations, and it sends DM campaigns to segments, which Manychat won't do on Instagram.

  • Instagram DMs: yes, and Instagram is the only channel.
  • Pricing (October 2026): Free with 100 active contacts and 50 AI credits. Pro starts at €12.99/month for up to 500 active contacts and climbs with volume (€19.99 at 1,000, €149.99 at 10,000). Annual Pro is €1,249/year. The AI agent is included in Pro.
  • Support angle: it connects to Shopify for checkout links, abandoned-cart reminders and order confirmation DMs. That's selling, though. I couldn't find anything about refunds or cancellations.
  • Best for: Instagram-first D2C brands and creators who mainly sell in DMs.

Chatfuel#

Chatfuel is an AI chatbot platform for WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook, and its pricing is the simplest here: "unlimited contacts and teammates, no seat fees".

  • Instagram DMs: yes, plus comment-to-DM, Reels comment replies and story replies.
  • Pricing (October 2026): no free plan, just a free trial. Business is $20/month ($18/month billed yearly) with $20 of AI credits. Agency plans start at $100/month.
  • Support angle: its AI agent hands a chat to your team "when a customer asks for a person, mentions a refund, or the AI agent isn't sure". Order tracking works when your store system sends updates through Chatfuel's API, so it needs a developer.
  • Best for: small teams that want comment-to-DM and an AI agent without contact-based bills.

SendPulse#

SendPulse is an email marketing platform with a chatbot builder bolted on, and it's the cheapest way in.

  • Instagram DMs: yes, plus public replies to comments on posts and Reels and story mention replies.
  • Pricing (October 2026): Free covers 3 chatbots and 500 subscribers. Pro is $12/month for 500 subscribers ($9.60 billed annually). AI is 200 free requests, then you add your own AI provider's API key and pay for the tokens yourself.
  • Support angle: a team member can pause the bot and pick up the conversation. I found no way for the bot to look up a Shopify order.
  • Best for: budget-conscious shops already sending email through SendPulse.

If you need one shared inbox across channels#

Respond.io#

Respond.io is a team inbox for high-volume messaging, priced on monthly active contacts like Manychat, only further upmarket.

  • Instagram DMs: yes, plus "Auto Private Replies" that DM people who comment on posts, Reels, ads and live stories.
  • Pricing (October 2026): Starter is $99/month ($79 billed yearly). AI agents and broadcasts start on Growth at $199/month ($159 yearly). Extra contacts cost $12 to $15 per 100.
  • Support angle: solid routing and assignment. Its Shopify page says that for syncing orders you connect "via Make, n8n, or Zapier", so order lookups are a build job.
  • Best for: mid-market B2C teams running sales and support across WhatsApp, Instagram and more.

Trengo#

Trengo is a European shared inbox with an AI agent, sold on flat plans with users and conversations included.

  • Instagram DMs: yes, along with comments, mentions and story replies in the inbox. Trengo pitches its AI agent as a way to "reply to comments and DMs on Instagram and Facebook". I didn't see comment-to-DM.
  • Pricing (October 2026): Boost is €349/month on monthly billing (€299 annual) with 10 users. Pro is €599/month (€499 annual) with 20 users. AI conversations carry a surcharge of €0.25 to €0.30 each, and broadcasting is an add-on.
  • Support angle: Trengo says the agent "can perform basic actions like tracking orders through integrations". Its Shopify page talks about stock and product recommendations, nothing about refunds.
  • Best for: support teams of ten or more who want email, WhatsApp and Instagram in one place.

If your DMs need an order looked up or a refund done#

Chat bubbles poured from a funnel travel along a conveyor belt and turn into small parcels by the time they reach a lamp-lit packing desk
The DMs that matter end as parcels, not replies. That takes a tool that can reach the order.

Tidio#

Tidio is the closest thing to a support tool in the usual roundups. It's a live chat and helpdesk app that's big on Shopify, with Lyro as its AI agent. We've done a full Tidio comparison if you want the detail.

  • Instagram DMs: yes, in the same inbox as web chat, Messenger, WhatsApp and email. Its Instagram page doesn't claim any comment automation.
  • Pricing (October 2026): Starter is $29/month for 100 human-handled conversations. Lyro AI is priced separately, from $39/month for 50 AI conversations. Growth starts at $59/month.
  • Support angle: human agents can cancel orders, refund and change addresses from the dashboard. Lyro handles order status and stock questions, and the first Lyro Action is free.
  • Best for: Shopify stores whose support starts on the website and spills into Instagram.

Botpress#

Botpress is an AI agent builder priced per conversation, with its own helpdesk (Botpress Desk).

  • Instagram DMs: yes, DMs only. No comment automation.
  • Pricing (October 2026): Free gives 100 conversations as a one-time trial. Plus is $189/month for 250 conversations ($150 billed annually). Team is $939/month ($750 annually).
  • Support angle: you can build an agent that does almost anything... if someone builds it. Shopify order lookups come from third-party integrations, and they're read-only.
  • Best for: teams with a developer who want full control over a custom agent.

Hay.chat#

This is our product, so weigh this entry accordingly. Hay.chat is an AI agent for customer support that answers from your policies and acts in the systems you already use: Shopify, WooCommerce, Stripe, Zendesk and others. On Instagram, it answers your DMs.

The limits first. It doesn't read or reply to comments, and it doesn't do comment-to-DM. It doesn't send broadcasts. It handles text only for now: inbound images, stories and reactions are ignored, and replies go out as plain text (rich content is planned). And Instagram only lets a business send a free-form reply within 24 hours of the customer's last message, so if that window has closed, Hay.chat waits until the customer writes again. That's Instagram's rule, and every tool on this list lives with it.

  • Instagram DMs: yes. You connect an Instagram Professional account (Business or Creator) by signing in and approving permissions. No tokens to paste.
  • Pricing (October 2026): Solo is €50/month with 500 resolutions included, Starter is €135/month with 2,000. Flat plans, no per-seat fees, and you get a 30-day free trial with no card needed. Full details on the pricing page.
  • Support angle: this is the part most tools above leave to Zapier or a developer. When someone DMs "where's order #1042?", Hay.chat looks it up in Shopify and replies with the tracking status. It can preview and issue a refund (capped at what Shopify allows), open a return for eligible items, or change the shipping address on an order that hasn't been dispatched. You write the rules as plain-language playbooks. Low-confidence replies go to a human, and anyone on your team can take over the thread from the Conversations view.
  • Best for: Shopify and WooCommerce stores whose Instagram inbox is full of order questions, not lead magnets. The Instagram chatbot page shows how it works, and the same agent also runs on WhatsApp.

If that sounds like your inbox, try it on your own DMs for 30 days. It's free for the month, no card needed.

A lot of stores end up running two tools: Manychat or Inro for the comment funnels, and a support agent for the DMs that follow. That's fine. They don't fight over the same messages.

How to pick one in ten minutes#

An egg timer beside three neat stacks of envelopes in different colours and heights
Ten minutes: sort last month's DMs into three piles and the choice makes itself.

Open your Instagram inbox and read the last 50 DMs. Sort them into three piles.

  1. Mostly replies to your own posts and campaigns? You need growth tooling. Stay on Manychat, or move to Inro or Chatfuel if the contact pricing hurts.
  2. A mix of channels and a team of five or more answering them? You need a shared inbox first. Respond.io or Trengo.
  3. Mostly order status, returns, sizing and "can I change my address"? You need something that can see your store and do something about it. That's where Tidio, Botpress or Hay.chat fit, depending on how much you want to build yourself.

If you're still on pile one and just want Instagram to answer when you're asleep, you might not need any of these yet. Instagram and Meta Business Suite have auto-replies built in, and I've written up how to set up Instagram auto reply with the native options first.

Frequently asked questions

It depends on the job. For comment-to-DM growth on Instagram alone, Inro is the closest like-for-like and starts at €12.99/month. For flat pricing with unlimited contacts, Chatfuel is $20/month. For customer support DMs that need an order looked up or refunded in Shopify, pick a support tool such as Tidio or Hay.chat. Prices as of October 2026.

If your Instagram DMs are full of order questions, Hay.chat answers them from your store data and does the refund or return when your playbook says it can. Plans start at €50/month with 500 resolutions included, and the first 30 days are free, no card needed. Start your free trial and see how many of last week's DMs it could have closed without you.
